Biography
Romy Hosford is a multimedia artist and Associate Professor of Visual Arts at Roberts Wesleyan College. She holds an MFA degree in Visual Studies from Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY, in conjunction with The College at Brockport, SUNY, and a BFA and MS in Art Education from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, where she concentrated in ceramics and fiber arts.
From 2002 - 2008 she worked in Fairfax County Public Schools as an eighth grade art teacher where she helped to implement a countywide computer graphics program at the middle school level. She has also worked in the Creative Workshop at the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester NY and as an intern in the Education Department at the Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY.
Her work can be described as storytelling through object, material and historical contexts; often dealing with perception, definition and expectation. In addition, it investigates the concept of memory - personal and cultural, remembering and forgetting. To foster a sense of the domestic, she utilizes found objects and imagery along side created ceramic, fibers, mixed media and photographic/media art elements. Her current research is in the area of digital media culture, specifically Remix and other cultural aspects of technological development.
As an educator she challenges her students to question and challenge the cultural misconceptions about the arts and the media/electronic arts. She urges her students, and society in general, to constantly evaluate whether they are making meaning or just perpetuating fads or trends. Media is more than the technology that creates it and the roll of media artists is far more integral to life than for mere technical proficiency, persuasion or commercial gain.
